
While online spaces offer many benefits, they also expose young people to misinformation, conspiracy theories, AI-generated content, and other harmful material—often amplified by digital platforms designed to reward emotionally manipulative and polarizing content. HUM’s media literacy resources equip youth with the skills and habits to navigate these digital environments critically, thoughtfully, and safely. Participants learn to find and evaluate online information, recognize manipulation, bias, and misinformation, and engage with others in ways that promote empathy and understanding. They also gain insight into the technical and financial structures of digital ecosystems and how these systems are incentivized against public interest. HUM empowers young people to imagine and advocate for healthier, more resilient digital spaces that serve their needs and interests.

The CTRL-F: Verification Skills is a digital media literacy program that equips participants with the practical skills they need to find and evaluate online information (including, but not limited to, disinformation). CIVIX provides online workshops to facilitators to prepare them to deliver the CTRL-F content, and also has two self-directed websites participants can use to move through the CTRL-F skills on their own.


A series of PSA-style videos written by Alex, and co-produced with SCC staff, highlight issues like astroturfing, bots, and deepfakes.

One of the young producers, Magician Lachlan performs a series of card tricks that engage youth audiences, while connecting themes of deception and media literacy as the producers begin to share their work.
