IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A YOUNG LEADER!

Welcome to the 2025 Against the Current Knowledge Exchange. We are very gratetful for everyone who joined us to be a part of this inspiring day and explored youth leadership together.

Rooted in decades of youth-led action, research, and practice, this knowledge exchange explored leadership as a dynamic process of learning, youth-adult collaboration, and meaningful change. Throughout the day, participants journeyed through a "Leadership Village," exchanging knowledge through conversations and activities that examine questions and forms of youth leadership at individual, social, and systemic levels. Together, we created a space where diverse forms of leadership are recognized, barriers are dismantled, and we co-created more knowledge to support youth in shaping the present and the future.

This webpage is full of information, tools and resources from this incredible experience.

How did the day flow?

Each session block begined with a Kick Start Presentation at the front of the room. Led by a team of youth leaders, adult allies from the non-profit sector, and academic partners from the Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement, these 15-minute presentations combined evidence, lived experience, and critical questions.

After a short transition, participants headed into their chosen Neighbourhood breakouts, where they engaged in a 40-minute small group activity or conversation. These sessions were co-led by youth and adult facilitators and offered different ways of engaging with the session’s central question.

Throughout the day, attendees could also visit our Theory & Practice Poster Zone, where participants, academics, and community partners showcased models and research related to youth leadership and engagement. It was a great place to gather inspiration and take away tangible ideas.

We captured the conversations in the various neighbourhoods throughout the day and created the visual below to highlight key themes and quotes. Navigate the different slides to see the evoluation of our collective Youth Neighbourhood Village.
